Career Overview:

Until early 1998 he was a full-time consultant in the Management Services unit of DNV This unit provides Safety Management System consultancy for clients in UK, and for multinational groups whose headquarters are in UK. These services include those related to the International Safety Rating System (ISRS)

Until the end of 1992 he was Director of Technology of DNV Technica Ltd, responsible for the development and uniformity of all technology used within that company. He was responsible for technical staff development and training, and also for the provision of external training courses.

He gained recognition for his work in the field of industrial safety in 1986, when he was elected to the register of Safety and Loss Prevention Specialists of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. He was elected a Member of the Institution of Training and Development in 1991 (now the Institute of Personnel and Development).

After joining Technica in 1982 he managed more than 100 safety related consultancy contracts, mainly in the areas of offshore and onshore oil and gas, chemicals and petrochemicals. He has prepared evidence for a Public Inquiry on safety and environmental impact of a crude oil pipeline and for the Piper Alpha Inquiry.

He was seconded for 18 months to Technica's US subsidiary where he was responsible for finances, for quality assurance of projects, provision of training courses on Safety and Risk Management, and assistance in the implementation of HAZOP Programmes for two major international chemical companies.

Before joining Technica he gained considerable experience of process design, startup and operation of petrochemicals plants, during 13 years working with ICI Petrochemicals and Plastics Division. While with ICI, he worked for 3 years in Holland, initially directing a contractor's development and process engineering of a world-scale polypropylene plant, and later as commissioning team leader, and technical advisor for the first six months of operation.

His first industrial post was with BXL at Manningtree, working as a plant investigator on nitrocellulose and cellulose plastics plants. He then joined Marconi as a computer programmer, where he wrote a major programme for calculating critical path networks

Career History:

1998 Independent consultant, providing safety related consultancy and training services to industry.

1996 Principal Consultant with responsibility for Safety Management Systems consultancy to the Oil, Chemical, Pharmaceuticals and Nuclear Power industries.

1993 Manager of DNVI Loss Control Management Unit, leading a team of 10 which provided training and auditing services associated with the International Safety Rating System (ISRS).

1992 Director of Technology of DNV Technica, responsible for technology, quality and training.

1991 Director responsible for Technica's Head Office in London.

1989 Responsible for planning and start-up of Stockport (Manchester) office, and for its first year of operation.

1988 Assumed Group responsibility for Quality Assurance, internal and external Training as well as HAZOP services.

1987 Appointed a Director of Technica's US subsidiary, taking responsibility for finance and technical aspects. Developed the market for HAZOP studies, training courses and fault tree analysis. Assisted major client companies in development of their risk management structures. Assisted two major chemical multinationals in implementation of HAZOP as part of their quality programs. This required provision of leader training, management training and team member training and later reviews of team effectiveness.

1982 Technica Ltd- Appointed a Director in 1984. Responsible to the Board for the financial control between 1985 and 1987.

Managed a Total Risk Analysis for the Gullfaks B platform and for a Norwegian refinery extension. Responsible for provision of a company safety policy document for a major gas production and distribution company in Australia. Managed a series of HAZOP studies for offshore platforms and onshore plant, and a series of safety evaluation projects considering the fatality and pollution risks for the Sleipner A platform in the Norwegian Sector, and chaired a HAZOP study of the platform.

Managed risk analysis projects for a major Concept design of a Norwegian refinery extension and a gas terminal, including condensate recovery and separation plant. Was responsible for a safety review of a water injection platform and an oil drilling and production platform. Managed several QRA and HAZOP studies for North Sea platforms.

Prepared evidence on leak probability, public safety and environmental impact for a Public Inquiry on a UK crude oil pipeline.

1969 Imperial Chemical Industries. Senior Research Engineer, studying plant design and feasibility of novel processes for PVC manufacture.

Successively Contractor Liaison Engineer, Commissioning Team Leader, and Technical Advisor during design and operation of a polypropylene plant in Holland.

Liaison Engineer, responsible for vetting licensor's design package for a polypropylene plant for Brazil. Led team of process engineers preparing design package for a plant for France.

Led process engineering on design of a plastics plant for UK. Also major contributor to Hazard and Operability Study of this plant.

1967 Marconi. Wrote one a suite of four computer programmes for critical path analysis and work scheduling.

1965 BXL. Worked as a process investigator on nitrocellulose and cellulosic plastics plants.
